google DE, diatomatious earth, food grade, not the stuff for pools. Does a wonderful job of keeping all insects away from just about everything, and does not harm worms!

There are not any preventative products on the market that a homeowner can buy that are effective. As far as things you can do,Eliminate conducive conditions,Make sure there is no wood-soil contact, trees touching the home, moisture conditions in the home or against it,rotten wood is replaced and sealed, mulch is not piled against the house, and firewood is stored away from the home. The only products that will work are done by a professional,do not take shortcuts in protecting your home.Call a Pest Control Professional and have a proper treatment performed. The best products are baits.Sprays just scatter the ants and will result in a larger infestation

Check with Mother Earth News, about 25 years ago I submitted a recipe (and was paid $20 for it) for a non-toxic ant poison. It was maid from dry yeast, molasses and ??. The ants ingest it, carry it back to the nest, feed the others there and their saliva helps to acitvate the yeast causing it to grow. It somehow causes the ants to explode intestinally and the entire colony is eliminated.

I lost the exact recipe when I went through a divorce.

Yeah, the combat type ant baits can be placed under bricks or furniture or places where your dogs won't mess with them and the ants will take the poisoned bait back to the nest where it stops either reproduction or feeding depending on the type of poison. Really quite safe for dogs. I used it in my yard last year and have two small dogs fenced in the yard

Only heard about this, never tried it though
Spread Cornmeal wherever you see them, the ants take it back to their home eat it, can't digest it and die.
Additionally use chalk outside, the ants can't walk in it and go elsewhere, this one I've tried and it works

I pour boiling hot water on their ant beds outside and smack em with duck tape in the house until they are gone.

there is a clear liquid that you place a couple of drops on a piece of tinfoil in the path of the ants. they go to it and eat it and track it back to nest and it eliminates them. it comes in like a 2 ounce squeeze bottle like the size of Afrin nose spray. that would take care of problem. i doubt cats would eat it.
