If government officials and politicians are granted vast public powers and trust, shouldn't they be punished MORE then the common criminal who doesn't abuse or even have either of these things? With great power comes great responsibility, but why is there no incentive to hold these people accountable in a meaningful way? I mean, any aspiring criminal with half a brain will see getting into politics or government offices is safer, more profitable, and can be taken faaaaar father then a life of street crime.

the ones in power set it up this way in case they should be caught them selves, it is called self preservation, and our people are so ignorant they won't even scream for equal punishment , when actually they should be punished more severally , after all a politician is in a position to harm many more people than the regular crook can,

Blame the laws that give lenient punishment to corrupt officials. Or blame those who make the laws. I read in the newspapers recently that in China, a former government official got the death penalty just for corruption? That's how extreme the laws are there but its a long way to totally eradicate corruption.

Government officials should be setting the example and should be expected to live up to the highest standards. Unfortunately, they rarely do.
So they hide behind their bevy of cronies and fellow criminals. -RKO- 06/11/07

It is called "You scratch my back and then I will scratch yours" they take care of each other.The normal citizen don't have big brother watching over them for security.
