A troll is a word created to quell discussion on controversial topics. It is usually used by the side that would lose a debate, if one actually took place, against the side that would win.
Sometimes a troll isn't serious about causing debate and only wants to stir up a ruckus. There really are a few people who get their thrills that way.
But, much more often, the word "troll" is used as a one-word ad hominem argument against a person whose beliefs, ideas and knowledge threaten someone else's comfortable, but erroneous, opinions.
The "urban dictionary" definition is, as you can see, only partial because it presumes that everyone who is CALLED a troll is merely interested in disruption, rather than in debate on a subject on which opinions are divided and emotions often run high (such as race or abortion).

Someone who basically ruins a good thing for other users on Yahoo q and a. Meaning, they do all they can to be outrageous and usually get reported. An attention seeker. A person who posts the same question a million times. A person who is constantly rude to Yahoo q and a users. Someone who wants to get the SHOCK factor. That is my definition of a troll.

Trolls are people who are frustrated with their inadequacies in life and feel they can hide behind a pseudoname on some postboard and make stupid, ignorant or disturbing comments about what other people think, say, do or post. These same people turn into Frankenstein's monster when you give them a car to drive.
