I would have to go with Mike Schmidt, followed closely by George Brett, verry odd that they are at the top of the list, because Schmidt was taken one pick higher in the first round than Brett,either way, neither team could have went wrong with those two guys. If A-Rod stays with the Yankees and thats a big if, that means he will play 3rd base for at least 5 more years and depending on what position you actually consider him, he would have to join the conversation.
My personell favorite is Matt Williams, he had a great glove and tons of power. Many forget that in the strike shortened season i beleive it was 1992, Williams was on pace to obliterate the single season home run record of 61 (at that time) he had right around 40 going into the all star break.

Right now I would say Alex Rodriguez but the bestest all-time third baseman I would have to say is Mike Schmidt. GO A-ROD!! GO YANKEES!! =)
