sometimes the only set of stairs is connected to the fire door. which, when opened, sets off the alarm.

They connect alarms to the doors so that when you open them, you set off the alarm. I guess they assume nobody ever wants to use the stairs?

You may have activated the alarm if it was an emergency exit. They are only to be used an an emergency, there is usually another stairwell that you may have missed.

Did you open the emergency exit only door? I did that the other day in a parking garage.
