I live in northern Illinois and have noticed that the cicada`s are very dense in some areas and almost nonexistant a block or two away. Why is this? What dictates where they lay their eggs? Or where they survive until the next hatching?

I have found that the cicada are partial to certain tree species. Are the trees different in the densely populated areas from those in the sparsely populated areas?

Cicadas like certain trees. They love trees with many trees in them. Although cicadas may not move on your street, they will become very populated once they find more trees. Cicadas like trees with a lot of cicadas on them. So if you see a couple flying around your house, expect a lot more to come in the next few days. I live on a small street with many trees. My friend, about 2 blocks away, had cicadas in his backyard, but I didn't. The next week, I had more cicadas than he did! They move extremely quickly.

There are probably ecological differences between the two areas, and they are choosing to live in the areas that are most favorable to them. If all their needs are met where they are, they will have no motivation to wander, and will stay put.
