The numerous canal-like ducts in the lung make it feel spongy. All of the ducts are lined with blood vessels. As air comes in, it fills these ducts. The oxygen is seperated and then absorbed into the blood through these vessels.

Anyway, one would expect lungs to feel spongy, because their structure is not totally unlike a sponge. To get maximum surface in contact with the air, mammalian lungs are made of myriad small sack like structures called alveoli.

well lungs are pretty much air insulation conducted. Lungs really do not need to be hard, because air is really light and it is also not thick and could fit in almost in everything
