From what I hear, it's the theory that your thoughts have an effect on the Universe. It is mostly being peddled by New Age groups who have taken up Eastern theories, especially from Hindu culture, and have made them pallatable to a western, non-mystical mind. It is the McDonalization of Eastern religions.
The Law of attraction states that if you have positive thoughts, you will attract positive things to you, in a kind of universal payback. This is loosely derived from the Hindu idea of Karma. But while Hindus are mystical, this attitude is hard to teach to westerners, so the New Age version takes away all mysticism and makes it a law, much as Newton's laws are laws. In other words, all esoterism is taken out of the Hindu ideas from which they originate. Furthermore, because New Agers don't have the patience of Hindu mystics (despite attires that would have you believe they are very much in tune) - they expect these causes and effects (Things Hinduism and Buddhism often deny even exist!) to have repercussion pretty much in the immediate. If you have somethig happening to you, New Agers will most likely have you look at the cause within last week. Hindus are willing to admit there may be something you did 1 000 years ago, or not - all you know is something happened; maybe you're even too hasty in deciding whether it's good or bad.
Also, this brings up another point: New Agers do little in term of getting you to really reexamine your values. While eastern mysticism is supposed to be a journey in the examination of your thoughts and your self to determine where your thinking is right, and where it is wrong, and not to be too hasty to decide, the New Age sells itself as being there to get you to fulfill whatever it is you want, without doing much in examining what it is you want, and whether it's a good idea in the first place. In other words, it is dressed up as esoteric doctrine, but it is all really exoteric - i.e. what do I do to get the Universe to get me a new job, a faster car and a cute girlfriend? (while spreading health and being spiritual).
This is why I call New Age the McDonalization of Eastern thought. They take away all the nutritive values of those time-tested philosophies and serve them to you in fifteen minutes or less, because we're way too busy for actual mystical exploration.

it works. i started telling myself a daily affirmation and its worked. and things are falling into place.
also to address the comment that this is a mcdondalization of eastern religions is incorrect. reggae "everything you have in mind jah will give" bible: "ask and ye shall be given, seek and yee shall find, knock and the door will be opened". the whole aladdin genie in the lamp in that story before it was three wishes it was unlimited wishes. it is nothing new to think that if you ask god you will be given. the power of prayer is well known which is why its so widely practiced.
Yes the secret is a generalizatin but not just of easetern thought. its generalized because it is general. no matter what you believe if you focus on somethign you will get it. whether that something be good or bad.
furthermore, we all like to think that eastern religion are so benevolent, but they have the caste system they oppress women.
the movement behind the secret does nto want to exclude anyone so its kept general.
what we need to all learn from it is that the universe and the way it is is becuase we all on individual level contribute to it and make it so.

The Will is positive and the Judgment is negative. Properly the Judgment serves the Will in life, improperly the Judgment is misidentified for the Will, and infinitely negative is the consumption for the Will into the Judgment. In that condition the Judgment stops labouring and is bent on action.
"Thus the life of God and divine cognition may well be spoken of as a disporting of Love with itself; but this idea sinks into mere edification, and even insipidity, if it lacks the seriousness, the suffering, the patience, and the labor of the negative." G.W.F. Hegel

Haven't really read it yet but I have it on reserve. I saw the trailer on You Tube. It's okay. Short story, this is what it all means. If you want something, go for it. Example, you want a new car. The Law Of Attraction is all about thinking what you want to happen. It attracts everything you think of. If you're thinking of getting a new car, then you'll definitely get it. But don't be discouraged even before you get started. You must focus solely on getting that new car. How? Positive thinking? Yes & No. YES, you have to think you'll be able to get it. NO, just because you're thinking about it doesn't mean it'll DEFINITELY happen. What's being taught is that you have to stay focus on your goal. LET NOTHING DISTRACT YOU.
How do you do that? Ignore all negative thoughts. Work hard for your new car. Don't think that jsut because you're a lowly employee you're unable to afford a new car. You must mainly focus on achieving your goal. Don't let any bumps in the way hinder you. If you do this, then you'll definitely have a new car. LOA is all about focusing your mind on one particular thing, which is your ultimate goal. From what I saw in that video, it tells you to let nothing distract you from getting what you want. If there are bumps on the road, then get over it & move on. Don't let it stop you from getting to where you wanna go.
Should you follow what I just said? Up to you. Best you fully read the book & judge for yourself it you're willing to do what's being said there. Hope this helps.
