You say a friend... if he is a friend, then I hope you don't have any enemies.

It is not a criminal matter as you willling reliquished both the radio and money for a radar detector, he didn't take it from you without permission. It is strictly a civil matter.

You should issue a demand letter reitterating the "verbal" contract and demand payment within the next 10-30 days or he will leave you no choice than to file a claim in Small Claims Court.

You can file a claim in Small Claims Court without an attorney by just going to the Courthouse, paying the filing fee and fill out the paperwork. The bad new as he was your friend and if you have no written agreement, if he denies receiving either or states that they were "gifts" you may lose as you will need to prove to the judge by the preponderance of the evidence that he agreed to pay you for the radio and that you gave him money for the radar detector.

Even if you do win, it could be an uphill battle trying to collect the money from him; it might be best to request the radio back so you can sell it. If you win and have to try garnishing his wages for the amount you will likely need to hire an attorney to help you collect the amount. You could end up getting a piece of worthless paper and the only advantage would be it will show up on his credit report for 7 years and mess up his credit rating and getting things he wants and chances for a better job until he pays it to get it off his credit report.

Because you have no written agreement, I think you have been had. However education is expensive, be it formal or informal... chalk this up to experience because your chances of seeing your money or the merchandise is about zero. This is a con artist & you would do well to avoid him in the future.

If he hasn't or don't respond to your request for the merchandise or the money you may call the law...
