War takes up less time on Fox News

NEW YORK - On a winter day when bomb blasts at an Iraqi university killed dozens and the United Nations estimated that 34,000 civilians in Iraq had died in 2006, MSNBC spent nearly nine minutes on the stories during the 1 p.m. hour. A CNN correspondent in Iraq did a three-minute report about the bombings.

Neither story merited a mention on Fox News Channel that hour.

That wasn't unusual. Fox spent half as much time covering the Iraq war than MSNBC during the first three months of the year, and considerably less than CNN, according to the Project for Excellence in Journalism.

The difference was more stark during daytime news hours than in prime-time opinion shows. The Iraq war occupied 20 percent of CNN's daytime news hole and 18 percent of MSNBC's. On Fox, the war was talked about only 6 percent of the time.

The independent think tank's report freshens a debate over whether ideology drives news agendas, and it comes at a delicate time for Fox. Top Democratic presidential candidates have refused to appear at debates sponsored by Fox. Liberals find attacking Fox is a way to fire up their base.

"It illustrates the danger of cheerleading for one particular point or another because they were obviously cheerleaders for the war," said Jon Klein, CNN U.S. president. "When the war went badly they had to dial back coverage because it didn't fit their preconceived story lines."

Fox wouldn't respond to repeated requests to make an executive available to talk about its war coverage.

So how to explain the divergent priorities? Different opinions on what is newsworthy? A business decision?

A mere coincidence?

When you are trying to tell everyone that Iraq is a hair's breadth from being a shining star of democracy in the middle east, and that we are winning this war by winning the hearts and minds of the grateful Iraqi people - it is best not to show them the utter chaos and undisguised resentment we have really created there.
Instead - just keep saying everything is great and if anyone disagrees Hannity can shout them down while Bill mutes them.

Its all the news networks. Leno was making fun of MSNBC the other day because they were talking about Paris Hiton going to jail all day and then had one little sentence about the guy in iraq being replaced. Its all about ratings, I guess

Fair and Balanced? Not Exactly! But as much as I disagree with their reporting techniques, I think they have a right to do it. Fox News after all is a corporation not a government entity. It is easier to comprehend if you view them as a business selling a specific product to a specific demographic. Like Philip Morris using cartoon characters to sell cigarettes to anyone who buys it. Fox News also uses cartoon characters to sell their product as well. If you buy what Fox is selling, we understand the addiction and know that many you have been lured in through false advertising. There is hope though, through complete abstinence and liberal support groups, you too can prevent this form of cancer from spreading throughout your brain before it becomes terminal.

How many times is this question going to be asked in the space of a few min...
I have never watched Fox...but I can see where their ratings are coming from!!...I clicked the link and it looks like Fox reports it right the first time and doesn't have all the opinion commentary afterward...that would sure make up the % difference lol.

Irwin, your late to the punch for one. your lib bud already visited this issue. the more important fact is that no one reports any of the positives at all, zero, none and tell me that there are no positives to report and you call many, many of the troops you guy's claim to support, LIARS.
So CNN gives more coverage to the carnage than Fox and MSNBC does too, good for them, does it help? does it make you happy? I don't watch any of them, you choose your poison. nobody will care but you, Irwin.

Well, aren't WE a flaming liberal out to start a fight?

CNN is the banner of the Democratic party. (see Communist News Network) Of course they want to show you the bad side of the war. Is anyone reporting on what improvements have been made?
