The Artemis Fowl series (by Eoin Colfer, of course) almost seems to challenge the reader. One of those so-intense-it-HAS-to-become-a-movie collections. (It IS being made into a movie, lol.) If you like scifi/fantasy, you must read it. (Note that most of the descriptions on the backs of the books are too stupid too believe. They are awesome, no matter how they are labeled.)

Keep on reading! Excellent!

I'm going to second the Uglies book by Scott Westerfeld. It's part of a trilogy, with Pretties and Specials. It's science fiction and about a possible future where, at 16, you have an operation, changing you from an Ugly to a Pretty. Problem? Well, they mess with your insides, too.

If you like fantasy, try Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy. It's pretty powerful stuff and very visual.

Still in the fantasy realm is Anne McCaffrey and her Dragonriders of Pern series. Remember, this was written years (even a few decades now) before Eragon.

If you're ever interested in a good cry, try a Lurlene McDaniel book.

What about Maximum Ride by James Patterson? I haven't read those yet, but I have read a few Alex Rider books by Anthony Horowitz. Those are fun.

Have you read The Giver by Lois Lowry? Many schools require it now, but there are a couple of others - Gathering Blue and messenger. I'd say I liked the 3rd best of all.

Another fantasy series would be Piers Anthony and Xanth. Full of colorful creatures in a strange land shaped like Florida and the language...too many puns.

I would start some adult classics. Great Expectations or David Copperfield, To Kill A Mockingbird, Bless Me Ultima, Pride and Prejudice, True Grit

For easy reading: Stargirl, The Higher Power of Lucky, The Tale of Despereaux, Peter and the Starcatchers

There's a female fantasy author, Tamora Pierce, who has lots of fans among my students; "And the Among the ..." series by Margaret Haddix Peterson.

Without knowing what genres you enjoy, here are some suggestions of good ones I've read recently (though they're not all new):

Uglies by Scott Westerfeld
"Traces" series by Malcolm Rose
House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer
Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card
The Big Empty by J. B. Stephens
Tomorrow, When the War Began by John Marsden

Adding some more:
* Royally Jacked by Niki Burnham (like Princess Diaries), and there's a sequel called Spin Control plus most of the Simon Pulse Romantic Comedies: http://www.amazon.com/Simon-Pulse-Romantic-Teen-Comedies/lm/2Z5TN5D9OAQ8E?tag=24680e-20 (I haven't read one yet that I haven't liked)
* Elsewhere by Gabrielle Zevin, about a girl who dies and goes into her afterlife
* The Missing Persons series by M. E. Rabb, about two orphaned Jewish sisters from New York who run away from their evil stepmother and hide under assumed names in small-town Indiana. The titles are The Rose Queen, The Chocolate Lover, The Venetian Policeman, and The Unsuspecting Gourmet. Check her website: http://www.merabb.com/
* Have you read Gossip Girl yet?

Go to about.com and type in high school reading list. There are several good suggestions there for summer reading. They are not necessarily young adult books, but you will profit from reading them.

When I was a kid I read Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys books. I loved them. My mom was an avid reader, but she would tell me that her books were "too old" for me, thinking that I wouldn't understand them. The first time I read one of her books, it blew my mind. It was like taking off the training wheels! There's some wonderful literature out there. You might also try the Times Best Books list. Enjoy.

Also anything by Garth Nix.
The Game by Diana Wynne Jones

Nobody's Princess by Esther Friesner
Am I Right or Am I Right? by Barry Jonsberg
City of Bones by Cassandra Clare

If you like video games and best friends stories I think you might like my novel GAMEPLAYER: The Genesis Portal.
GAMEPLAYER follows the adventures of Nine-dog, Gator and Louie; three racially diverse buddies growing up in the skateboarding, video gaming obsessed Santa Monica, California beach life-style.
Their lives revolve around school, skateboarding and video gaming until a bizarre encounter with a run amuck video game propels them into a deadly world of terror, murder and intrigue.
It's available at the normal online sites like amazon, B&N, Borders, etc. and as an ebook on mobipocket.com.

Not meant as a commercial just a suggestion,
Gary Anderson
