He became a war hero in the first WW. He spent his entire life trying to build up Great Britain and prove himself to his mother and himself in the process. He was such a presence in WWII, the Allies would have lost it without his guidance. He was the right man at the right time and made an everlasting name for himself.

Yeah , he also tried to force conscription on Ireland and had no problem with the Black and tans or auxiliaries and the horror they caused or any particular in interest in the welfare of Ireland. He may have been a hero for some. But here , the words bully and cruel are fairly dominant.
