I say no they should not -
That there must be a 100% civilian board that has the power to fire cops after an investigation of wrong doing if warrented
I am tierd of hearing about a horrific event that police committed and then the phrase ending with suspendeed with pay -
I just don't think it is possible for a cop to be imparital in judgeing his/her peers and that it is unflective of the relationship of ta payer to public servant
There is the argument that civilains can't do it they don't "know" enough - I believe this is wrong -
For instance we use a jury system here - 12 ordinary people decide the fate of men when it comes to somthing important - like the guilt and innocence of a person - We do not use experts We use ordinary people, I believe we can use ordinary people to judge the actions of the public servants (the police)
Who could be better that the persons who feed them and their children - the employer - the tax payer to judge the recipents of our tax dollars

I completely agree. There is the "blue wall" spoken about, where cops don't turn on other cops.
I think cops need a completely separate institution that monitors and investigates all activities. Otherwise its like grading your own tests in school. No matter how bad you did your giving yourself an A.

If the policeman is charged criminally, he will be judged by 12 "regular" people. Now do you want 12 regular people to investigate a charge against the policeman? Police investigate crimes including those by police.

Joe at the Hardware store does not put on his detective hat and investigate a Policeman. They are not charged by the State to do that.

The jury system and Internal Affairs are very different but are different steps to the same ending as any criminal case.

I cant think of any street officer that feels his best buds are in IAD. There is usually a very big gulf between the two groups, mostly because the street officer feels the Internal Affairs guy will try to bust him for anything and everything to go higher in the job.

Other than the investigative part of this, everything else you want is there. Jury, police board, firings without criminal charges, criminal charges and firings with criminal charges and jail time.

Yeh but what can civilians do if they know whos a bad cop and whos good? The jury system is not all good eg you get one black man and all of a sudden the jury is 100% the death penalty. I think cops should have the RIGHT to investigate their own, only they are in the position to know.

it is better for cops. they know all the ends and outs ands where to look for things.they can tell when another officer is lying.a civilian does not have any ideas at all on how the department is run or what any of the jobs are like.
civilians boards are normally made up of radicals and people who have a axe to grind with police.people watch wat too much tv and get their thinking distorted by watching tv.internal affairs leaves no stone unturned.i have seen numerous people fired and suspended.25 year retired deputy shriff
