I am not sure if Sherlock Holmes uses such detailed information when he speaks as much as he shares with us all the details he observes.

By giving the reader exposure to all, at first, seemingly unconnected bits of information, we are drawn into the story to try to figure out whats going on.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the author of the Sherlock Holmes' stories, takes the endless number of jigsaw puzzle pieces he has found for us, and then starts to slowly put the pieces together in a very clever way, enlightening the reader as though they, too, are on the verge of a great discovery, until it reaches a crescendo pitch where everything that did not make sense, now makes the clearest sense - this is the genius of the inimitable stories of Sherlock Holmes. (one of my favorites of all time)

He is an intellectual. It's not that he is trying to be obnoxious, it's just who he is and how he speaks. Very rarely any more do we have people who are known by the way they speak, but in Britain this was the entire hallmark of a university education, you speak in such a manner that the uneducated will be left out of the conversation. In the USA today it is a statement of pride to 'dumb-down' a conversation, to talk so everyone can understand. In Britain that was definitely not the case.

In addition to this, Homes wants to be precise and he wants to also make allusions to other cases and situations. That's another lost art here in the USA, the ability to make connections.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wanted Holmes to seem smart in a confusing way. Think the "babbling genius" label.

Because he is explaining how he solves the mysteries and giving the details of the crime to the readers. Detectives are detail oriented people. Pax - C
