It can vary a lot, depending on circumstances and the individuals involved. But basically the producer starts with an idea or a script, then gets the money together and approaches a director. Sometimes the director knows who he or she wants for key roles, other times the producer may be involved in those decisions. Usually the director decides how, where and when the scenes will be shot. A lot depends on how much personal power the director has and/or chooses to wield.

A producer is basically like a business owner. He is responsible for everything administrative - as he hires the director. A director is responsible for the creative aspects of filmmaking the type of acting he gets out of the actors, the work of the DP. As Spielberg says, "If a movie succeeds, it's everyone's credit. If it fails, it's the director's fault." Check out the links below for the Director's Guild & Producer's Guild as well as the IMDb link to 'ask a director'.

In general terms the producer deals with the business side of the production and the director deals with the creative. There is overlap in practical terms.

A producer would select a director and set up the film's accounting, budget and financing. They may have additional input on hiring of actors and other talent.

Directors deal with creating the film, determining the shots and directing the camera and actors.
