You could take a medical leave of absense and they can't do anything then.

first, if you cannot do your job anymore, but the doc won't write a note, does your doctor understand what you have to do at work (lifting, walking, etc)? It's in your's and your baby's best interest - especially if you have a physically demanding job. What you can do, talk to your boss or HR department. Maybe they could move you to another position temporarily if you want to continue to work. Also, if you have to take off from work, short-term disability may be an option, but you may have to convince your doctor or find a new doctor who will agree that you are no longer physically cabable of doing your current job due to the physical demands. You have up to 12 weeks in a year to use under FMLA, some may be unpaid if you don't have vacation/sick time to use.
If you continue to just call in sick, then you could lose your job. your best option is to be open and honest with your employer and see if they will work with you.

Yeah, your job can fire you for calling in sick. This is what I would suggest:
Make an appt with your doc ASAP. Tell him/her why you can't work anymore and that you want to be given a note for medical leave. Maybe write a list of everything you want to bring up during the visit so that you don't forget. Make sure that you make it known to him/her that you don't feel like your needs are being met and if he/she doesn't take care of it, you will go elsewhere. If doc still refuses, you still have options.
First, talk to the human resources people at your work. Maybe you can take a personal leave until the baby comes. Just tell them why you need the time off and that your doc doesn't believe in granting medical leave unless it is an emergency. Make them tell you all of your options. Maybe you can go on call or something?
If that doesn't work, talk to other docs and see what they think and if they would give you medical leave. Believe it or not, a lot of docs won't give a leave unless it's medically necessary or an emergency. I have dealt with this before. I was spotting at the time and they STILL wouldn't give it to me.
However, depending on the company you work for and the kind of work you do, you should atleast be able to get a personal leave from work.
Good luck, I know what you are going through! Feel free to contact me if you need someone to talk to.

Talk to your doctor and explain to him that you does very hard physical work, and that you doesn't want to take any chances on anything happening to your baby. I would also suggest that you go to your human resource and tell them that you want to put in for a medical leave pertaining to maternity leave. If you have benefits and you can get the paperwork from your doctor then you can also apply for short term disability, that way you can have some income coming in to help you. If your doctor doesn't give you the paperwork needed, then I would suggest that you ask to see another doctor. I don't understand why your doctor doesn't just give you the paperwork considering your situation.

You can take FML, but unless you have vacation/sick time saved it will be unpaid. Does your doctor understand the physical demands of your job, and have you explained exactly why you feel you can't work anymore? Specific symptoms you are experiencing (swelling, extreme fatigue, specific pains, etc...)? He may be willing to put you on light duty, rather than saying you need to stop working.
If not, talk to your employer, explain to them that you really value your job but the physical stress is too much for you right now, they may be willing to reassign you, lighten your work load, etc... Good luck, and congratulations on your baby!

Sometimes talking to the RN in the Dr's office helps, call tomorrow and then go back to your doctor or another doctor in the group and explain your duties at work. If that doesn't help go to the nearest ER after work when you are feeling horrible and they can help you.

The right way would be to discuss taking time off using the Family Leave Act... The dishonest way would be to fake a fainting spell... Perhaps the company would move forward with Family Leave to protect themselves from a law suit if something bad happened to you or your child...

Well pregnancy isnt an excuse to miss work unless you are put on bed rest for some reason. Its crazy but true. We have specific guidelines to follow and we cant excuse you from work without reason. If you go into labor early, or you have high bloodpressure, we can excuse you from work. You could try to speak with your boss about your work load and possibly they could help you out with that. I wish you luck , your almost there....

Yes, they can fire you, but honestly, you may want to find a new doctor. Any doctor that isn't understanding about that may not be the best choice.
