Of course each of these characters changes throughout the story. Judy is the classic spoiled brat who just wants everything for herself, both when she is young and as she grows older. She plays with men like she used to play with golf clubs. She loves them then brushes them away, until finally she marries and settles down, but her husband doesn't, and she is left in an abusive, adulterous marriage.
Dexter is sort of just the opposite. He is stable and a bit boring from the very beginning (not that much different from Jay Gatsby) and he seeks to love and to settle down with Judy, but she will have none of it. He is left, as many people are, with that forever question "What if ..." and is shocked to hear that Judy has settled for so little, when he could have offered her so much.
