well, I'm 13 years and i just made it into to pre-professional dance companies for next year. The time commitment is huge (30+ hours a week) and I'm not sure how I will be able to fit in a social life, and time to do homework. What should i do? This is my dream, but i think i may be taking on too much.

Your dream of dance and your education should be first. If you don't have an education, you will not be as well rounded as you should be. You will not be able to dance when you are much older and your mind will be important. Try and work in a little social life here and there, but you will have plenty of time later for that. Good Luck!

If this is your dream, really your dream, then you pursue it with all of your mind, body, heart and soul. Dreams come true, but you do not reach your dreams without hard work and without making sacrifices. You've been given a golden opportunity. If you want this more than anything else in your life - you take it and commit to it and don't worry about the rest. We get all caught up in the "what ifs," but everything usually works out one way or another. If you believe in your talent, if you believe you have a gift, then you must use it. If you're more concerned with a social life, don't waste your time pursuing a serious artistic career. As one responder said, you need an education. If you must give up your social life in order to study dance and do homework, then so be it. Dancing is your joy. Artistry requires dedication. How dedicated are you? Answer that question and you will no longer be in emergency mode.

I think that you should go for it! I have been dancing myself for about 14 years and i have always wanted to go into professional division but i have always been scared. anyways i have a friend who is in professional division of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and she has about the same commitment and she still has a social life and she is a very good student. all you have to do is make time for everything, be organized and plan. maybe buy a planner and just write down (for example) dance 5-8, homework 8-9, possibly hang out with friends from 9 and on. i dunno if i were you i would NOT pass up this chance! you can do it. if you have been accepted already, then go for it. it will be a lot of work but it should pay off in the end, when you are a prima ballerina! lol

Wow! That is a pretty big commitment for a 13 year-old! But obviously you have talent and a gift that you shouldn't waste. You're really lucky to have this opportunity so in my opinion you shouldn't pass it up. If I were you I would stick with the dance company at least for a little while and see how you adjust to the time commitment and it's mental and physical requirements. If it turns out to be too much, then atleast you can say you tried! Good luck!

How does the 30 hours break down? If you're working 7 days per week that's about 4 hours per day. If you are working only 6 days per week that's 5 hours per day and if you're working 5 days per week that's 6 hours per day. Doing 30 hours in 5 days may be very stressful. But spread out over 6 or 7 days it would still give you enough time for homework and even time to be with friends.

It can work if you follow your dreams.

I'm almost 16. I'm a dancer also. I was in your situation when i was your age. It is a huge commitment and you'll have to endure excruciatingly painful emotional time. I too thought i was taking on too much when i first started dance companies but it gets so much easier trying to fit everything in i mean. But i'll tell you what i did. i put my studies first, then dance, then my social life. It was hectic at first but it got easier. Don't worry, just keep your head high, smile, and point those toes. =]

I think you should go for it, it is your dream, isnt it? You must be really good to get into a pre-professional company, so dont let anything get in your way!! Maybe you wont be able to fit as much time in with friends, but you always have lunch breaks! And as for the homework, you could kill two birds with one stone and get together a 'study group' at lunchtimes, I know it sounds REALLY nerdy, but your desperate, right?

If you want it that bad, you'll be willing to sacrifice some of your social life. You will make friends with the other people in your company. Good luck to you!!!

p.s. You can do homework in between or on the way to classes.
