A 10 gallon tank is really to small for a turtle. A young one can survive in one, but will need a larger one soon. They would also need a place where they can climb out of the water to bask for a while, either in warm sunshine or under a light. They also need to be provided with a shady spot, so if you are using a light to provide warmth and brightness, then plants are necessary for the shade. Plants will also make the turtle feel more comfortable and help to use up the waste the turtle is going to produce. However, even with a lot of plants, a turtle in a 10 gallon is going to require that it be cleaned often and have frequent water changes.

Hi there,
I own 2 redeyed water turtles.
I have them both in a 10 gallon tanks:
1. Gravel
2. Heater (especially made for water turtles, can buy at any petstore like petsmart)
3. Filter pump ( I only need to clean it like once a month)
4. A Floating Dry Place ( also especially made for turtles)
5. My aquarium has a lid with regular lightbulbs for fishtanks in it
I have them now since about 6 months in there, and haven't had to change the water once yet, I only fill up the tank with additional water about every 3 weeks, depending how much water disappears.
It has no nasty smell do it and I don't have any algues growing in it eather. ( very imortant, you have to put your tank into a dark corner, no sunlight this way you don't grow any algues in it and don't get that nasty smell either).
They are now about 3 inch big and seem to be very happy
We feed them once a day with turtle food or dryed shrimp(they love the shrimp)
Good luck

You could put some cool fire toads in a 10 gallon, with half water and half land. But turtles get fairly big, my sister has upgraded a few times already and her turtles are still babies.

what sort of turtle? pink Earred sliders does no longer be happy in a 10gal tank, they strengthen as much as dinner plate length, regardless of the undeniable fact that adult males won't get as huge. they're VERY messy & in many cases happening fish filters go through badly with them, you may pass a minimum of a million or 2 sizes up. i does no longer placed a RES in something smaller than a 30-40 gal. you besides could prefer a dry dock section for basking wiht a UV easy, Turtles are alot of artwork. some human beings discover great around plastic tubs artwork greater efficient, no corners for around bodies!

a twenty gallon is really better for the smallest turtles -- they need a varied diet of live food like worms and greens as well as turtle pet food.
heres a page with lots of different turtles on it --
