I don't use algebra, but knowing it has proven useful in several things I do use occasionally, such as setting up spreadsheets, doing a little light computer programming, and understanding how some things relate to each other mathematically.

It might not hurt to update and modernize algebra and the way it is taught, but I wouldn't eliminate it. It is a key to several other math disciplines and should be kept in some form.

What it does is make you think critically and that in turns helps you rationalize things in ways you may not have thought about.
