If you keep your cars for a long time and if gas continues to rise, it is a great idea to consider a hybrid.

Using the Corolla vs. Prius example:
Comparably equipped, you are looking at about a $7K price difference in the price of the car.
A Corolla will average about 34 mpg overall.
A Prius will average about 47 mpg overall.

13 mpg difference. At $3 a gallon, driving 15K miles per year, you save about $100 per year for ever mpg better. This is $1300 X 5 years = $6500. You have almost made up the difference.
In addition, since gas is over $3 a gallon, the savings could be higher if it continues to stay this high.

In addition, the hybrid technology has been out long enough to prove that they are reliable.
Lastly, you can also get a tax credit (at least for now) by buying a hybrid and you can feel good about driving something that helps save the environment.

they are a great idea
but very expensive now and they barely give you many more miles than some of the other coupe cars like toyota, mazda, honda etc.
but i think the technology is right around the corner and we will start seeing quite a change in hybrid cars soon and electric too. its still just the begining wait a couple of years and the industry will be booming with hybrids

They are much more fuel efficient than conventional cars and they have good power and acceleration but...

The total environmental impact is greater (using the dust to dust theory) because of the battery manufacturing and recycling.

The fuel savings isn't enough to justify the extra cost until you have driven it for almost ten years (with average annual use).

Also the long term maintenance might be costly (battery replacement, electric motor replacement, etc).

I think that hybrids are a great concept, but a complete different fuel source is needed.

Not worth it, you can buy a loaded corolla for thousands less than a base prius, and get close to the same mileage.

Great car! It helps you reduce the cost of oil on your budget and it helps the environment too.

yes, honda... that's all there is to it, they were the first to start doin it, and they're the best at it. Never mind what everyone says about prius, it sucks, and it doesn't get 60 mpg... never :P
cheers
