Spina Bifida can develop in an unborn child if the mother does not take enough folic acid from a certain stage of pregnancy.
Taking a folic acid supplement from at least one month before conception through to the end of the 12th week of pregnancy can help reduce the risk of Spina Bifida up to 70%.
Foods containing folic acid are

Spina bifida (spinal cord not closed) and anencephally (no brain). Anencephally is always fatal while spina bifida has a high fatality and disabling rate.

It is now recommended, in the US, that all women take either vitamins or folic acid from the age of 14. Half of all pregnancies are unplanned. If you are significantly overweight, higher doses are recommended. By the time you find out that you are pregnant, the damage, if any, is already done.

Spina Bifida - you are best of taking 500mg of Folic Acid at least a month before falling pg - if you didnt get a chance to do this dont panic, just start taking a good prenatel vitamin supplement.

You can get folate through your diet so dont panic too much if you havent been taking the supplements - just start now

Best of Luck, I am 7 weeks pregnant myself - dont stress too much, just do the best you can do xx

Spinabifida, or any other neuro-tube defect. The neuro tube develops first, and usually before a woman knows she is pregnant so a woman should take a folic acid supplement before she starts trying to conceive.

spina bifida.

Best to take the tablets one month before trying to fall pregnant or when you find out you are pregnant, take it then.

The sooner you take them, the best chance your baby has. Good luck!
