If you're taking an oral pain killer for the knee, it should circulate around in your bloodstream and find the neck as well. If you woke up with the pain, it's probable you may have slept on it wrong. Don't try popping it as this can potentially cause significant injury if not performed by a trained professional such as a chiropractor. Try putting ice on the neck for 15-20 minutes, and repeat every hour (the first few minutes the ice will probably feel painful, then achy, and eventually numb--the goal is to reach the numbness stage). You can also try massaging the neck to release the tight muscles; it works better if you can have someone else do it for you. If your neck pain persists or gets worse, you ought to see a doctor. Good luck!

1] the first 48 hours after an injury you should use cold to reduce pain and prevent furthur swelling. After 48 hours, you can switch to heat.
2] depending on the medication, you might be able to take Tylenol - ask your doctor or the pharmacist on duty.

You can sprain or strain you neck just as any other muscle group. If it is a chronic problem, you can use a cold compression therapy wrap to stop the pain and inflammation until the injury is healed.

See http://www.coldoneinc.com and look for the cervical neck wrap.

Put heat on your neck...I would suggest making an appointment to see a chiropractor or a massage therapist.
