Make sure the needle is installed properly. The flat part of the needle goes to the right or left, depending on the make and model of the machine. They often can be mounted either way, but the needle will be mis-aligned if installed incorrectly and will break the thread. Check the owners manual, if you are missing this, you may be able to get the manual online for free! Also be sure the top tension is not too tight, this will break the thread as well.

Good luck

Sounds to me like her tension is messed up but it can be very delicate. Only move the tension know a teeny tiny bit at a time, it can be easily broken. Either that or.....The machine is not properly threaded, refer to your owners manual for instructions. Or, perhaps the fabric is too heavy for the thread. If all else fails take it to a local shop for adjustment, it is not expensive. Good look and fun sewing

You don*t say where it is tearing; in the bobbin? Try loosening the upper tension, or tightening the bobbin. Also make sure the needle is threaded correctly. and that the needle itself is not bent, or not far enough up in the slot .
If all this fails, go to the manufacturer and type in manuals and booklets, you should be able to download the info that way. Had that problem my self. Hope this helps.

Clean and oil the machine, then adjust the tension in the top and bottom. Also check to see that the needle is facing the correct direction for your machine. See the owners manual for this.
