BC could be a good option for you because it will help your period come at predicted times (as well as prevent pregnancy). Side effects include headaches, bloating, and weight gain. You may have to try several different brands of BC before you find the one that works best for your body. I recommend Mircette (generic: Kariva). It is generally tolerated well, and is effective towards reducing PMS symptoms.

For me, the only side effect is some mild nausea in the first few weeks on the pill. I also went up a cup size.

It really depends on what type of birth control because many are different (the pill, the patch, deprovera (shots), chewable, etc!)
If you are going to use the traditional pill (ie. ortho tri cyclen), there are some side effects: breakthrough bleeding, weight gain / loss, breat sensitivity, nausea, mood changes, etc.
There are also some benefits: regular periods, clearing acne, etc.
