i've always thought he was faking. i do think he has alzeimer's but not an extreme case. he knows what he's doing and i believe he knew who both tony and janice were when they showed up. yeah he knew. he said something derogatory to her in italian. what is was i don't know but just the look in his eyes and on his face said it all.

What they did was another element of the show.
You are talking about it
That is what writer Chase wants
To stir the pot make the people think and comment.
So he did his job with you by asking the question

Seemed like it to me but maybe just bad acting
I dont think he was supposed to be faking it. By that point all the drugs they were mellowing him out with might have helped make him out of it and unable to remember stuff

Tony is met with more skepticism from his daughter, and after arriving at Bowdoin, is struck by a Nathaniel Hawthorne quote on display in the admissions office: "No man... can wear one face to himself and another to the multitude, without finally getting bewildered as to which one may be true." ... This is the series in a nutshell.

Yes, he is ornery, but with Alzheimer's Disease that really is the way it is. Their memory goes, and they only remember people from when they were very young. My grandfather had it, and he did not remember me until I talked with him for a long time.
Good question. Best wishes.
