using NVU editor (www.nvu.com), it's free and wont tie you down to one method of editing. NVU pages can be transferrable to frontpage or dreamweaver html editor
SEE http://www.interkeys.com/htmleditor for more info on Premium HTML Editors (WYSIWYG)

In your html editor, simply create the pages of your website by putting in your text, tables, layout , pics etc.. then you upload it to a webhost..

For free hosting, try google pages pages.google.com or yahoo geocities ,
its sort of free hosting, but you are limited to a subdomain on googlepages & geo has ads on your website - otherwise I would use http://www.interkeys.com/tophosts to get one for a few bucks a month with 500 GIG bandwidth and the rich with features

its up to you how developed a site you want and if you want to use your own domain name

If you are currently a paid Internet subscriber, you are entitled to a "homepage" which often contains simple navigation and editing tools. And if you use the Netscape browser, the built-in Composer feature is a superior HTML authoring tool. You can easily generate a full-blown website as a Homepage. Nevertheless, the "homepage" URL is likely to be "http://homepage.earthlink.com/subscriber... name" and that URL can easily be overwritten via a redirection service, i.e., "mydomain.com" which allows you to link any registered domain name to "mask" another website. For example, should you type in "domainname.com", you will be immediately transported to the homepage and the hompage URL of http://homepage.earthlink.com/subscriber... name will be masked by the domainname.com. And the charge for the redirection service [even at godaddy.com] is normally FREE. Here's a demonstration: Type in the URL window: "www.pizzanextdoor.com" which will bring up their pizza website. Take note of the domain name. Then type in the URL window: "http://home.pacbell.net/vten/1a/pizzamen... and you will see that this is the original homepage which is unmasked without the domain name!

Good luck!

It's difficult to make a fully-fledged website without paying more money than you probably want to pay. However, you can get your own little personal network of pages hosted in a number of places (I use Yahoo Geocities).

If you want to try Geocites, first go there and go through all the additional registration and terms of agreement and so on you need to in order to activate Geocities for your account (you can use your current account if you like, it is not necessary to make a new Yahoo account for it). You will gain access to something called the 'file manager'. Make sure you remember how to get back to that file manager page, then go out and use either an HTML editor or a text editor to make an HTML page. If you don't have an HTML editor, you can search on the Internet for 'OpenOffice' or 'Nvu', which are two free HTML editors. If you're using OpenOffice, go to file/new/HTML document, and you will be presented with a new blank HTML document. This can be edited for the most part like a standard Microsoft Word document (inserting images is harder, though, so don't do that at first). Type whatever you want your home page to say, then save it on your computer (wherever you want to keep it, it doesn't matter) under the filename 'index' (the HTML extension will be added automatically). Go back to the Geocities file manager page, hit 'upload', browse for your new file, click 'okay' and then click 'upload files' or whatever it says. It should say 'files uploaded successfully'. Now click the 'view' link next to the 'index' file in your file list. Voila, there is your web page, up for all to see!

Keep in mind that the index.html page is the one that will load if someone goes to that directory without specifying a page, so it is a very good idea to keep your main page called index.html. Other pages under any other names you like can be uploaded, and you can hit 'view' on them and then copy+paste the address bar contents into OpenOffice to make links to your other pages.

That's the basics, anything else you should be able to learn from there. :)
