These programs have always been offered, and are excellent for persons who want to study several fields within the arts. I took a Bachelor of University Studies which allowed me to study three major areas, rather than the traditional major/minor track, and later entered graduate school, earning a Master of Arts degree. I highly recommend this path to self-motivated persons, such as yourself.

I think it depends on the student, his or her goals, and the program. If it is truly an interdisciplinary FINE ARTS program, I think it makes alot of sense. So many people are using mixed media and diverse forms of presentation for their ideas that having a broad background in fine arts is useful.

If the program is trying to mix fine arts and design though, that is more problematic--particularly for the design students who really need an intense focus in the various aspects of their profession to assure preparedness for entering professional practice. Those programs seem to be trying to be "everything for everybody" and in the end they don't really do justice to the information or effectively serve many of the students.

So from me the answer is, it depends. Ask plenty of questions about what you want to do and what this school and this program can offer you in developing your skills and reaching your goals. Let the buyer beware--sometimes hype is just hype. Good luck!
