Canadian Geese........Emperor Penguins.........and many others all mate for life. When one partner dies or is killed, they wait, sometimes for a long time, for a younger member to come along that is willing. In the case of the penguins, it really is quite sad........What they go through in order to survive and provide for their species future is simply incredible........Watch the movie "March of the Penguins"..........It is funny, touching, and incredible all at the same time............

Most birds don't mate for life specifically because of situations like this. It's not always easy to get through even one breeding season alive. If it's too late to remate, they'll just write it off for the year and try again next year.

They do have to wait until a new partner is available, most cases are younger individuals in dire need to reproduce, new guys that can get no better partners.
