I am going to be majoring in finance and want to get a head start. I was wondering if anyone could suggest some really basic books on the subject. Something that the average person could learn from. Thanks for any help.

The 'usual' class sequence is to take two semesters of Business Law and Intro. to Accounting before you take anything else. I highly recommend this -- it gives you the basic concepts for what goes on in business, the names for them, and an understanding of where they'll show up in a firm's books.

armed with that, you can drop in to your community college's bookstore and find out what text is being used for their introductory classes.

I'd probably skip the text if someone at the CC is an author or co-author.

Then you might want to browse the course offerings [online, of course] for a major University's Finance Department just to get an idea of the diversity of finance and check what parts of it seem interesting. [Some people love capital markets, others don't ... same for financial intermediaries, etc.]

That'll probably give you enough ideas for quite a while.

enjoy [MBA finance. I worked in the industry, too.]
