I fell on my leg yesterday and my right knee is killing me. It hurts on the inside of my knee (not the kneecap). There's no swelling or discoloration but I can't walk without limping and it's worse if I sit for a while and then try to walk. It hurts all the way to my hip but the sharp pain is at the knee. I have an ortho appointment tomorrow. With no swelling could it be serious? I've heard some knee injuries require surgery.

If you have an orthopedist appointment tommorrow, then i'm sure the doctor will be able to figure out whats wrong and tell you how to treat it. Some injuries do require surgery (my dad's had about 4 knee surgeries in his life) but others aren't serious at all. for today i would suggest icing it if it feels like its more of a joint pain, but if it feels like its your muscle, then ice could make it worse depending on the injury. Take some advil or aleve to help with the pain for now, but the doctor will know what he's doing, and in all likelyhood you'll be fine. It sounds like you may have twisted or sprained your knee, or you may have just strained or torn a muscle. If you twisted or sprained it, then you might need surgery, but they may just put you in a knee brace and let it heal on its own. If it's your muscle then he'll probably tell you some different stretches or exercses that will help. either way, you may be on crutches for a few weeks, depending on the severity of it. knee injuries are really common though, and most aren't extremely serious, so you should be fine.

For now place an ice pack on your knee, fifteen minutes at a time, several times a day, and keep your leg slightly elevated. Do not try walking other than to the bathroom and back.

from your description it does not sound like this is something minor. You're going to get your answers tomorrow after the orthopedic doctor does an examination. Try not to worry about it this evening , because there's nothing you can do except wait. if you have any muscle relaxants I would suggest taking one this evening. Advil soft gel capsules work quickly to help with pain. Take them four times daily.

Anytime you fall directly on your knee you push your patella (knee cap) against your femur. Very sensitive and triggers what is referred to as patello-femoral pain.

Sometimes when you fall directly on a bent knee you can injure your PCL (posterior cruciate ligament). The Ortho will probably order an xray just to be sure you didn't fracture your patella.

Ice 20-30 minutes every 2 hours or so for pain and inflamation. Don't panic - most knee injuries do not require surgery.
