There are only two movies with Michael J. Fox playing a guitar that I remember and they are Back to the Future and Light of Day...I don't remember any guitar challenge in either one.
There was Crossroads with Ralph Macchio and his character challenged the devil's guitar player to win the soul of Willie Brown.
He played "air guitar" in Teen Wolf and there was no challenge in Back to the Future. His band tried to get a gig for the high school dance and Huey Lewis was a judge and told them they were just too loud...when he played at his parents high school dance, he got out of control at the end and told them their kids were gonna love it.

If I remember correctly it was Back To The Future. He was in a contest, and he got up on stage and played guitar. Towards the end of his guitar playing, he started playing heavy metal with his guitar and everybody in the audience didn't know what to think of it. And then he said something like, your not ready for this yet.

Maybe you're thinking of Teen Wolf - I remember him playing a guitar, but he was dressed as a wolf
