Why don't you go and see for yourself. I shop at and work with a small store with just over 100 freshwater species in stock. That's a lot more than some online places.

Well You can find different types of Freshwater Goldfish like orandas, fantails, black moores, and the common comet.
You can also find many different types of Freshwater Tropical fish such as the Angle fish, barbs, tetras, molly's, bala sharks, and many more. I'm not very familiar with the saltwater fishes, but i do know you can get the clown fish.
I would suggest to call you local pet shop to find out when they get thier fish in and a few days after that go and check out what they got. If you got questions as to what fish can survive with what fish make sure you ask. some fish need a little salt and some dont. I got an angel fish, checkerboard barb, gold barb, and 2 mixed fruit tetras, along with with a pleco alge eater.. my gold fish are bit dewndeld due to dropsy so all i got left in my tank is a pleco, 2 cory's 2 comets and a fantail.

Goldfish and bettas.
Tetras, especially the smaller variety like Neons are also very common. They are very nice fish.
Platies are also at most pet stores. They are my favorite fish, but they breed a lot.
Most fish need a tank over 10 gallons.
Goldfish need a tank 20 or over.
Bettas need at least a 10 gallon.

Ask an employee to feed the fish you want before you buy it. If the fish looks healthy and eats healthy, you'll probably be okay. For saltwater fish I have to recommend going to a specialist, though. Almost every fish I ever bought from Petco would eat in the store but would die of starvation a few weeks after I brought it home.

Common fish in pet stores include goldfish of all kinds, live bearers (mollies, platies, guppies, etc), tetras of all kinds (neons, black skirts, etc), rasboras, gouramis, barbs, plus bottom dwellers like plecos, rainbow sharks and some kinds of catfish. Larger fish like oscars and other cichlids are also pretty common. Just depends on the store.
Smaller, local stores will have the wider variety and the more exotic species.

You could always try going to the pet store and looking, that will give you an updated stocking at that perticular pet store.

Goldfish or bettas. I love my little betta; he takes basically no work and he's beautiful and hardy enough to go back and forth 120 miles to college with me and back. I'd really recommend getting one for a first-time fish owner.
