I was told that rocks have an IQ. Is this true? If so how do they measure that?

IQ is a mostly misunderstood thing. The questioner probably knew this and is trying to help you understand IQ enough to understand why the answer is yes.

IQ is a relative measure taken within a group. E.G. take a class of kids, present them with many, many questions. It doesn't matter what questions too much as long as they all get the same and the questions are diverse. Compare the results. The results should give you a measure of the relative ability of the kids in the class, but tell you nothing about their absolute intelligence with respect to a larger population.

Hence it is usually misused as an absolute measure, or a tool to compare disparate populations. It is no such thing.

You can run the test on rocks. They would generally all come out with the same IQ=100, where 100 is the norm. They are all as smart as each other (I.E. not smart at all).

Well, they take people like you. Then they ask you and the rock multiple questions. If the rock gets more right answers. Then the rock has an IQ of 1 and you have and IQ of 0, lol. Hope this helps out.

Normally IQ is defined as intelligence quotient. In order to measure intelligence, there would need to be something that we can recognize as intelligence so that we could differentiate it between individuals.

Are you sure you're not asking about Moh's hardness scale, which ranges from 1 to 10, with shale being a 1 and diamond being a 10? Glass and steel come in around 5.5

You can look it up if you want more details. Go and learn, and have fun doing it. Wikipedia would be a good place to start.

Since 100 is average and all rocks would get the same score on an IQ test then as a group each one has an IQ of 100. If we compare them with humans then their IQ would be somewhere around Bush's.

It isn't true. It's hard to take your question seriously, but here I go: Rock's do not have IQs. Rocks are not living things, they do not exhibit an ability to reason or think abstractly. There IQ cannot be tested, for it does not exist.

Rocks do not have an "IQ" because they are non-living organisms. In other words humans need an "IQ" to function correctly. I hope what i wrote helps you.

Bad Idea for asking this question here because this place is over runned by sarcasim. not to sound weird but, personally I'd like to think they do because I love Geology and earth. rocks are a big part of that unfortunatly though they do not.
