Owners manuals for my lawn mowers say to use 30 weight oil. Can I use 5w-30 motor oil in the lawn mowers without any problems? What is the difference between 30 weight oil and 5w-30 motor oil?

According to Briggs and Stratton, use SAE 30 or 10W-30. 5W-30 is used in cold weather engines, i.e. snow blowers. If the oil gets too thin then it will not lubricate properly.
Kohler wants you to use SAE 30 in their K series and Magnum series engines, but 10W-30 in their Command, and Courage engines.

Yes, absolutely. Don't let it bother you or anyone tell you different. The best oil to use is a 30wt detergent blend however any oil of lubrication made for motors of the internal combustion design is satisfactory. These motors are not engines of rocket craft and are simply the most rudimentary of our engines used today. The difference with the weight classifications is the viscosity or the texture thickness of the oil and its additives during various temperatures outside the motor when starting and of the motor while running. Take a look at the oil on the dipstick prior to starting and note the viscosity and then again after running and see the difference in the oils viscosity when heated.
Also as a bit of info,.....you CAN use any oil you want even cooking oil but you MAY only use motor oil made for the inernal combustion engine,....get the ==-point-> ?

It will run with it , but you need to use 30 weight only because these motors work so hard and don't have much of a cooling system, 30 w holds up to the heat and stress not 10w or 5w

Its far too difficult to explain the weights of motor oil. 5w 30 will work. It is really too light, and you should use 30 wt.
5w30 maintains its viscosity over extreme temperature changes. When its hot, 5w30 will get too thin to properly lubricate your lawn mower.

5w-30 full synthetic motor oil is best for your lawn mowers base on the temp. range it protects.
