I'm an architect, and learned all techniques. There are many qualities of pencils and crayons. Perhaps, if you want to get a particular effect, crayons (or a mixed technique) may be adequate. But, if what you want to give color with versatility, standard colored pencils will work much better than crayons.
Much more if you use good pencils. I use (water color - soft - that meld with water) Carand'ache pencils.

Crayons because I found that they don't break as easily as the colored pencils do.

actually I like the water color pencils- they give you an easy way to sketch now and paint later.
