Some fish are very hard to tell the differents but in most cases the male is the most colourful 1 so that it promotes itself to the females.

That depends 100% on the type of fish you are looking at. In many cases the males will carry more color and decoration but this isn't fool proof and there are species of fish that show no distinctive differences between the sexes. And if that wasn't enough they're are also a few species of fish that can change sexes! ;)

If you specify on the type of fish we might be able to help you more.

Different fish need different methods. If there's a particular species you're interested in, see this link: http://www.fishlore.com/ In the list of links to fish species profiles, click on any you're interested in, and at the bottom of the pagge there's a summary box that will tell you what to look for.
