Which is correct? I once had a teacher that said when she traveled east to west people say it differently on location. but I can't remember which is right?

On purpose, by accident. This is one of my pet peeves, when people say on accident. It drives me crazy!

By accident is widely used..i've spoken to people from east to west..

I would say BY accident. I come from Wisconsin and now live in Kentucky. I always thought "On" accident was incorrect - but "ON" purpose is right.

At least, that's how I always said it and heard it said. I seldom hear it the other way.

I have heard both, but I personally use by accident, or accidentally. As far as I know, both are correct, at least in casual conversation.

i frequently hear by accident and that's what I usually say.
