The thing that weirds me out about Salem is that none of the Witches that the city claims as their heritage were actually witches. They were actually victims of hysterical teenage girls and an overzealous clergy.

I found more interest in Nathaniel Hawthorne, a native of Salem. "The House of the Seven Gables" is a real place and you can find it in Salem. This is also where he wrote, The Scarlet Letter and Rappaccini’s Daughter.

The "Witch's" Shop--if still named that--is wonderful for tourists, but not somewhere I would look for that needed to craft Magick. The witches museum really tries, but the Seafaring museum was of more interest.

Oh yes, don't miss the Olde Candy shoppe. I had a week long suger high after spending myself silly there.

Of course witches are interesting. However, I agree with the majority of comments about Salem in regards to the innocent people who were executed there.....the innocent non-witches, to be sure. What self respecting witch would be stupid enough to be caught?
Incidentally, I am left a little unclear about the last part of your question, do you want to see these torture devices for some vicarious thrill seeking, or genuine (but dismayed) curiousity?

i live 2 towns over from salem and have gone on so many field trips there over the years..its sad lol..if u live on the nothshore..its like the place to go the end of the year..anyways..i mean its ok...they have the wax museum which freaks me otu cause they look like they are about to jump you! and the memorial but the stuff didnt actually ahppen there...actually the man who was crushed to death is buried where i live...i mean its interesting but not worth that drive....halloween however.....now being from the area i have been to haunted happenings ( its what its called) a dozen or so times..its def fun...people follow you in costumes and jump at you, there are all kinds of haunted houses and ghost tours ( which are fake actually,..there arent that many ghost stories in salem that are real) but its def fun to go..i would just say to you do not go on halloween night..its insane..completly touristy...if u go a few days before, its so much less crowded and still has everything there...btw just a quick thing...the witches that were hung..werent real witches...they didnt fo any occult things...there are however people in salem who claim to be witches that have all kinds of occult goodies in their shops..,good luck!

most real witches laugh at those who visit salem b/c there where no actual witches killed during the salem witch trials. I myself am a witch but, still think it would be fun to go.

PS all the witch stuff actually happened in Danvers so you may want to check that town out too.

You may also want to read about Fakir's, Shamans, and Tribal Priests - there are many similarities.

Contrary to popular belief, there is nothing wrong with occult or cults. Dont believe the propaganda.
(you might also want to get the dictionaries definition of occult and cult)

The largest religion in the world was once a cult of outspoken fishermen of men.

It is interesting. If you go at Halloween it is crazy. Book months ahead because the hotels fill up fast.
Danvers is where the witch trials took place.

I would imagine that most so-called real witches are naturalists and herbalists and not the fables we hear about. I have met a few who claimed to be witches but were actually party animals instead. Whatever.
