I got a tank off of craigs but it didn't come with anything including the lid. What can I use for a substitute????? I just want to use it to cover the tank at night so the fish don't jump out.

Are there places that I can buy lids???

That shouldn't be a problem, you can get glass tops (they're glass that sit on the inside lip of the tank), full hoods (which are plastic that sit sometimes on top and sometimes inside), or a screen top (which usually sits around the outside of the tank).

I personally prefer glass tops they're easier to clean and the plastic hoods are easy to break. You should be able to find one at most pet shops barring your tanking having odd dimensions - most smaller pet shops will special order for you if you do have odd dimensions on your tank.

P.S. you should keep the tank covered all the time because fish will jump out during the day sometimes too.

Any decent pet shop will carry hoods or lids for most standard sized aquariums.

For the night you could use even something as simple as a piece of cardboard of styrofoam. It might get a little wet, but it will keep the fish from jumping.

The hoods and canopies on this page are what you are looking for. I don't know if that's the company you want to buy it from, it's just a page I found. You can buy them just about anywhere they sell aquariums, sometimes Walmart, most definately at a petstore that sells aquarium fish. You'll need to know the size and shape of your tank to get the right fit.

Good luck.

I once bought a piece of plexiglass from a home improvement store and cut it to fit. You can also drill or cut custom openings for the filter and cords (easiest with a saber saw or jigsaw). Go with something with a bit of thickness, or the plexiglass will bow.

A hood is a necessity. You can buy one at any local pet store.
