I just asked this same question in psychology. I want to ask the people in here as well, as I see a lot of the avatars I'm talking about.

This question is for people that use an avatar with a frowning face or a mean looking face.

Just curious, why would you what to be represented like that?

Wouldn't you want to have a smile or at least a neutral look on your face.

Do you like being portrayed as an angry or miserable person?
If so, why?

Well, Elmo'sworld, that is not really adapting is it, that's letting @#$% get to you. If you adapted good to the @#$% life throws at you, you still should be wearing a smile.

SOME PEOPLE JUST THINK THAT HAVING A SMIRK ON THERE FACE MAKES THEM LOOK COOL!!! WHEN ALL YOU REALLY NEED IS A SMILE AND THEN EVERYONE WILL BE HAPPY JUST LOOKING AT YOU!!!

I'm not an angry or mad person in generally. I am one of the most upbeat people you will meet. I am extremely optomistic. However, my words and opinions may seem upsetting to others. My opinions are too the point regardless if you do not like them. I mean what I say, and I stand by it. The truth is favorable to lies. I chose a frowning avatar because until the two books I am waiting for comes out I will be disgruntled and agitated. Not a frown of anger, but disappointment. Time goes by too fast when you want it to slow down, and slows down when you are waiting for something...

Because I am a pessimist. Some people think that it is a bad philosophy, but I think it is realistic. As a song says "When breathing just passes the time until we all just get old and die. Now talkings just a waste of breath, and livings just a waste of death, and why put a new address on the same old loneliness, when this is you and me, and me and you, until we've got nothing left." Depressing, sure, but at least you know where you stand, and things will not change, no matter if you are happy or sad, eventually you will be old and ignored and you will die.

I'm not sure what my avatar looks like actually, but I know that I'm not smiling hugely.

I've wondered the same thing at times, too. I think sometimes people do it to look cool, or they do it because they think that if they're unhappy and they ask an unhappy question, people will get the question more or sympathize. Or possible take the question more seriously. I don't know, I always like portraying myself with a smile, so I'm not positive if everyone would agree with me.

although I'm usually quick witted and pleased with my lot in life...I carry an attitude that seems course to many...my avatar with my mean expression, lets others know that my words may come with a bite....if you saw a smiling face, with a heavy handed remark beside it, you may be very shocked...seeing my grumpy expression, one knows what might be ahead, before a single word is read....a picture is worth a thousand words...and its easy to see what mine has to say I think...I will write what I think, and if I don't like the question, at a glance you know, you might not like the answer...

I don't think frowning or mad avatars are that cool, really. If the person wants to wea that expression or feels that way, they should be allowed to express and have their own opinion.

I actually asked this question a long time ago. From what I remember, they think it makes them look tougher and they'll get more respect. In reality, I don't think that's the case at all. I'm giving you a star.

Because some people are just dark and brutal and filled with hate, like METAL. They ain't got no time for rainbows and bullshit and see the world the way it truly is.

That's who they are. They're sad so they show it, so right off the back you know that's part of them. I know you're not supposed to judge people based on appearance but it does show the person's personality and is part of their life journey.

It could be that it's how they learned to adapt to **** that life throws at them. They probably don't care how they're represented, it just shows their true personality.
