Yes, France and Germany hated each other at this time because of wars they had late in the 19th century. To show each other how great and tough they were, each nation made allies with sympathetic nations. Germany allied with Austro-Hungary and France with Russia. Europe began to be divided between the two factions and tensions soared. All it took was one spark.

The spark came in 1914. "On 28 June 1914, Gavrilo Princip, a Yugoslav student, killed Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, in Sarajevo" (Wikipedia). Bosnian terrorist assisinated the next king of Austro-Hungaria. Austro-Hungaria demanded that Bosnia pay for the murder but they did not. Austro-Hungaria declared war.

Because of the alliances formed before the war, allies of Austro-Hungaria (ie Germany) and Bosnia (France) entered the war. The UK was not initally involved as they only had a "gentleman's agreement" to help France. However, Germany marched through Belgium because it was the best way to invade France. This angered the UK as Germany attacked Belgium, who had declared themselved neutral at the start of the war. This caused the UK to declare war on Germany and Austro-Hungaria.

Shane's off the topic.

The reason the countries listed were allies during the war is because they were allied prior to war. As with any alliance, the countries listed had signed treaties amongst themselves for financial gains and security purposes. However, when one country declared war, it's allies were bound by their treaties to go to war as well. Hence the phrase: Entangling Alliances

With the exception of the US which was the last to enter the war, the other nations had formed alliances long before the war started to try to neutralise the power of their potentially hostile neighbors

The answer to both is Entangling alliances. These countries had signed treaties with each other and that's where the lines happened to fall. That's the shortest, simplest way to put it.
