A few times, Amsterdam is one of my favorite cities if not my favorite in the world. Made lots of friends, ate lots of great food (stroop wafels, shwarmas, bamis, brotje haring and more) did hours of people watching at my favorite pleins.... I'd go back in a minute.

EDIT: Okay, good places to people watch: Leidseplein, Dam Rock, and (while shopping) Nieuwendijk/Kalverstraat.

Good places to eat: Any place that sells shwarmas on the outskirts of the redlight district (the part that borders the dam straat): look around warmoestraat, that's also a good area for frites (fries, try them with mayo). Good pizza can be found near the paleis or leidseplein. Stroopwafels: try c & a (nieuwendijk). for brotje harings (raw haring sandwiches) look for a cart near the dam rock.

Good place to relax: Wondelpark (go by tram it's a long walk)

Good place to see Ajax: ArenA (take the metro to the bijlmer)

Good museums: Rembrant / Rijks

I haven't been for 10 years, so my nightlife ideas are probably very outdated.

Goede reis...

I lived there for 19 years. If you want to visit the Netherlands I suggest you avoid the bigger cities.Instead try to visit the smaller places on the Veluwe in Gelderland instead. It is nice there and a lot safer.

yes we took a group of scouts over from Belfast and the people where great very helpful and nearly every body spoke English to some degree the transport system leaves us in the UK in the shade, hire a bike and buy a good heavy chain for the bike if you are planning on going to Amsterdam. The rest of the place is amazing double decker trains and they are very cheap buy your tickets at the station as they are cheaper than from the conductor.

Well, I've lived in this country for almost 26 years (minus 6 months in the US) and my experience is: wouldn't want to live anywhere else!
