Yes, it IS a great novel, But I'd say the author's "purpose" was more far-reaching than what's contained in the quote above.
It's about love, true - but its main theme is the question of whether humans are fundamentally good or evil. Atticus shows how it is possible to be good, to have integrity, even in adversity. He also shows how we humans have the capacity for both good and evil within us and how we each have to make the choice.
Atticus is Jem and Scout's moral teacher, and he knows that he must prepare them to face a world in which hatred, prejudice and ignorance will certainly be encountered. He shows Jem and Scout that they can come into contact with evil without losing the capacity for goodness.

I think she does hint at something else, and that is the story is about love and nothing more. Love for all humankind. By putting the qualifier contained in the first sentence, Lee is telling the reader not to read more into the book than what is intended: her message is love "pure and simple."

That's no hint - that's a hit over the head! The author is telling you EXACTLY what she plans to do; the story will be from a family's point of view, and how the events affect them and their love for each other.

If you haven't already read it, enjoy - "To Kill a Mockingbird" is truly a great book, in every sense of the word. How did I know that's what it was? Because I HAVE read if, of course!
