You can run a free test at http://www.crucial.com and find out what kind of RAM (memory) your computer needs. It will automatically test your system and tell you what you need and have in the computer (each slot).

You can get cheap memory at http://www.tigerdirect.com or http://www.newegg.com

First of all. If it were me I would open my case to see exactly what motherboard I have. After doing this I would research the net with this info. Crucial is a good start however, they told me my motherboard was only capable of handling 1g when in actuality it can handle 4g. Now after reasearching and with you new found knowledge start searching the net. Type in cheap memory for desktops. You'll get loads of sites that sell different ram. Then when you find what you want at the price you want it buy it. Furthermore, if you are a gamer your gonna want at least 2gigs minimum (the more the better) as well as a good video card. Made by nVidia of course. Another thing to remember memory with heat spreaders is also good. Check out these links.

You can buy it at any computer shop or online (try http://www.newegg.com, http://www.tigerdirect.com, http://www.pricewatch.com, or many others). As for price, it depends on what type/speed of memory. PC 6400 memory looks to start in the $37(USD) range while PC 133 memory looks to start in the $80 (USD) price range. The price will also depend if you are talking desktop, server or laptop memory. Only way to tell is to price it for your particular system.

you have many more questions to ask before an answer is available...

Type of ram (SD/DDR/DDR2)
Speed(2100/2700/3200/4200/5400....8000)
Voltage requirements? (MotherBoard compatibility)
Speed(CAS latency)
Form (dual or single chip?)
Compatibility (again, with MB)
