My laptop is connected to the internet, but when I go to Firefox or IE nothing happens, could this be a winsock error? What could it be?

(My computer connects through a wifi modem, but that is beside the point and don't let this confuse you to think that it is problem. I already had my modem checked and it is fine.)

Your laptop is never going to tell you it is connected to the internet, only to the wireless connection. It will say it's connected as soon as it contacts the wireless device. This does not even mean you have a network connection, let alone the internet. Go to start/run and type cmd and enter. Then type ipconfig /renew and enter. If you see an error message you are not getting an address from the modem. From close to the modem use your laptop's wireless utility to search for your network, set the encryption and connect. If this does not work you need to check that another similar unit nearby is not using the same ssid and channel. This will mask your connection, so you will then need to change yours.

Do you get the 'Can't find content...' page?

Try setting up a new connection through IE, and have it automatically detect proxy.
