I used to play on an acoustic guitar. Haven't had one in years and now I'm looking. Does anyone have any suggestions? I have found: Fender DG 8S (GREAT reviews $199. no s/h, no tax), Yamaha Gigmaker and Epiphone DR 90S? I do have small hands, so if there is a better one for my specifics PLEASE suggest, musicians advise, professionals, amateurs, music teachers, anyone with guitar knowledge...PLEASE advise. Thanks!

I've played, gigged, and taught on the side for 20+ years(I'm an engineer until 5pm), so here's my 2 cents-

1-Don't buy guitars via eBay and the net- go to a music store, and bring someone who plays along with you-have your friend test drive some guitars, listen, and decide which ones sound best. Play them yourself-decide what sounds best to your ears and feels best in your hands. I hesitate to recommend a particular brand or model. I have however, owned several Seagulls-made in Canada, great bang for the buck. The nice thing about Seagulls is that they have a slightly shorter scale(24 3/4") than a standard dreadnought(25 +").

2- Lose the DVD's and software- if you really want to play, find some group lessons at a local nonprofit community music school. You're much better off there than the half-hour at the superstore from the hung-over metalhead who's in between bands. The instructors at the music schools usually have degrees in the field, the lessons are usually less than what you'd pay at guitar center, and the advantage of group lessons is that since you are in with a group of students at about your ability, you can set up jam sessions outside of class. Remember - music is a social activity- if you're sitting alone in your room, you probably won't go very far- Good Luck!

I have a fender and my friend has an epiphone. We've both had a go on each others and I def prefer the fender and he prefers the epiphone! I think the best thing to do is try them out in a store and you'll know which one you personally prefer. I've always though Fender was teh best guitar brand though myself.

Its a personal decision. Of course some are better than others but I think that any guitar is a good guitar. What I mean by that is the player is always more important than the equipment. They all do sound slightly differently and the action is slightly different so just find one that you like and fits your style of playing. Trial and error is slow but I think thats more important than brand names and specifications. Don't get sucked into the business end of it... ...its an art form.
