What do you think? is it better to specialize in one field of study, or is it better to branch off into different studies and sciences? I ask this because i recently came across a quote that made me really think.

"Specialization is for insects." - ?

Even if you specialize you will find that you will likely end up working in a different discipline.

When I went to college I wanted to be part of the semiconductor industry. I majored in electrical engineering. I studied semiconductor physics and I learned about the processes necessary to create semiconductor devices.

When I graduated, there were no jobs to be had in the industry. I ended up designing the power systems for steel mills. From microscopic devices using microamperes to huge machines using thousands of amperes. The worlds couldn't have been farther apart.

From there I ended up in the petroleum industry, where I learned geology and became fairly proficient at programming. I switched jobs in the petroleum industry and, while I am still considered a programmer, my expertise is now in magnetics and corrosion data.

So, specialize if you want, but don't get your expectations too high. The diploma is more important than what you specialize in.

I definatly feel that you should specialize in one field. Ever heard of the saying Jack of all trades, master of none?

You need to major in something to graduate. I doubt if that quote was referring to college.
