If that doesn't work, just go to gmail.com and try signing up for one. You don't need to be invited anymore.

gmail is no longer Invitation-Restricted. Now anyone can sign up for free like yahoo or hotmail. Just go to www.gmail.com & you will see an option there "SIGN UP FOR GMAIL". Click it & make yourself a free id.

Gmail no longer requires invitations (it hasn't for quite a few months now!)

you dont need it. Just go on official gmail page and start 'Sign Up'. If You use Mozilla just type gmail in your address bar. So start it.
