Reagan dared G. to make good on his rhetoric. About 10 or 12 years later, this speech was mythologized as proof that Reagan singlehandedly defeated communism. At the time, Reagan's seemingly simplistic approach was mocked by Democrats and Europeans. The truth is in the middle. Reagan was pursuing negotiations with Gorbachev, who, indeed, wanted a more open society. The Germans tore down the wall 2 years later, when George HW Bush was president. Reagan played a part in ending the Cold War, but so did all the presidents before him, Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, and Carter, and one president after him, George Bush Sr.
